How It Works

Short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV-C) light is a well-proven method for disinfecting air and environments, killing or inactivating microorganisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA. Its effectiveness depends on several factors: the length of time the microorganism is exposed to the UV light; the intensity and wavelength of the UV radiation; the presence of UV-shielding particles; and the microorganism’s ability to resist UV exposure.

NoviSphere™ PE 254 is specifically designed to address all of these factors, using germicidal 254nm UV-C lamps to kill up to 99.99% of viruses, airborne bacteria and mold spores. The unit’s powerful fans draw in external air, directing it to the patented sealed chamber’s sanitization zone, where baffling and high pressurization are used to expose pathogens to the high-intensity UV-C array for the optimum length of time, ensuring viruses and bacteria are killed. The unit then expels clean, pure air back into the environment. NoviSphere™ PE 254 runs this cycle continuously to deliver up to four air changes per hour, depending on room size and application.

Independent Testing Shows Efficacy

Researchers in the University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering and College of Veterinary Medicine, with an established record in aerosol science and engineering, conducted testing of the NoviSphere PE 254 on porcine respiratory coronavirus, a surrogate strain similar to COVID-19. The CDC’s recommendation for ultraviolet germicidal irradiation refers to ASHRAE’s position on airborne infectious diseases, which states:

“ASHRAE will continue to support research that advances the state of knowledge in the specific techniques that control airborne infectious disease transmission through HVAC systems, including ventilation rates, airflow regimes, filtration, and ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI).”

ASHRAE suggests two UV-C strategies: installation into air handlers or ventilating ducts and irradiation of the upper air zones of occupied spaces with shielding of the lower occupied spaces. These strategies work to sanitize the air in a space while keeping occupants safe from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light.
